Work Experience

I enjoy working on projects related to multimedia, web and graphic design. Through my experiences assisting the webmaster of Samuel Gilbert Public School I've had the opportunity to learn more about XHTML/CSS, including cross-browser issues. If you beat a problem once, you'll know what to do when it comes around a second time. The best way to learn more about many languages or applications, is to experiment, read articles and follow tutorials on the internet. Here is a selection of paid or volunteer work I have done:

Khaos Komix

Khaos Komix is a web comic that was initially hosted on a free comic-hosting website. The author was having problems with the website's system and was thinking about buying a domain and hosting for the comic. I contacted the author with advice and offered to develop the website design and a system for automatically adding new comic pages and chapters, among other things.

The script, CGI written in Python, allows visitors to navigate the comic page by page or skip to another chapter. There is also an Archive page which lists every page in each of the chapters. Each chapter is told from the perspective of a different character, so multiple CSS files are used to adjust the colour scheme of the website to reflect the chapter that is currently being read.

McAfee Advantage

This web page was initially designed with tables and sparse use of CSS. I rewrote the code in XHTML using CSS for all presentation and built upon the initial design idea. I used Photoshop to create all of the mouse-over graphics (except for the original image of the camera) and JavaScript to control the rollover effects.

Samuel Gilbert PS Uniform Survey

Samuel Gilbert Public School's P&C conducted a survey of parents and students about the school uniform. They wanted to update some of the current uniform items and introduce new items for the students. Parents and students could view samples of uniform items at the school but the P&C also requested the items to be displayed on the school website.

I was responsible for preparing almost all photographs, taken by the P&C, for the internet. Many of these photographs were in poor light and included tables or towels as backdrops. I used Photoshop to remove backdrops and adjust lighting levels. Photographs of navy items often appeared too dark and needed to be adjusted so website visitors could clearly see garment details and colour appeared as navy instead of near black.

For your reference, the photos I was responsible for editing on the SGPS Uniform Survey website are: Question/Item(s): 4a, 4b, 4e, 6, 8, 9d, 10current, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19a, 21, 22, 23b, 27, 28, 31. I also assisted the webmaster in XHTML/CSS development of survey pages. Below are 6 samples of the adjusted uniform photos compared with the original photos, please click on each item to see a comparison.

Samuel Gilbert PS Uniform Survey Follow-up

The school P&C required a follow-up to the first Uniform Survey. New items were displayed on the website and parents could fill in the survey form online. I was responsible for editing the photos of the new uniform items by removing backgrounds and adjusting colours; they are displayed on the description pages. My primary job was to create a XHTML/CSS Form, which was based off the paper survey form created by the P&C. The form uses JavaScript to help parents and teachers fill out the survey and reduce confusion about what option combinations they may pick.

Northern District Hockey Association Inc.

The Northern District Hockey Association (NDHA) requested a complete site redesign and help with updating site content. The design uses the club colours (maroon, blue and gold) in a bright fashion, and is written with XHTML using CSS for layout.

SGPS Flash Animation

The Book Week theme for 2007 was READiscover, and the Samuel Gilbert library used 'treasure' as a display metaphor. The centrepiece was Aladdin's Cave, which used glowing fairy lights to simulate sparkling treasure inside. To capture the mood for the website I used a photograph of the cave with it's light's on, Photoshop and Flash to create an animation of the glowing cave.

Read For Life logo

The Read For Life project collects donated books for distribution to remote areas and communities that can't afford them. I volunteered to create a logo for the project based on a design idea and sketch by one of the project organisers. She suggested that due to the relevance of the project to the indigenous community that aboriginal colours would be a nice feature.

Samuel Gilbert Public School Flash Galleries

I created two interactive flash galleries for Samuel Gilbert Public School (SGPS) to display pictures from special events held by Kindergarten. The two galleries ('Kindy Blue Colour Party' and 'Nursery Rhyme & Fairytale Dress Up') can be viewed from the SGPS Photo Album or the direct links below (for DET privacy reasons these flash galleries can't be hosted on my site).
